Simply Heal 2 by Michael Phelan - June 2001 Sometimes it seems that the only thing growing faster than the Internet these days is the number of new energy healing modalities found there. Each of the hands-on healing methods existing only a few years ago now serves as a trunk for the limbs, branches, twigs and leaves of this healing tree of knowledge. Let’s look at Reiki as an example. Traditional Reiki begrudgingly split into Traditional and Non-Traditional Reiki. What was supposedly sacrificed in purity was replaced with affordability and accessibility. Those who could not afford the $10,000 investment could also now access this “Universal Life Force Energy”. Books, often condemned as heretical, were published showing secret symbols and ritual attunements not originally meant for the common person. After an explosion of Reiki Masters and the resulting competition for dollars brought prices down even further, we suddenly saw more branches growing on the Reiki tree. Reiki Master/Teacher, Advanced Reiki, Usui and Gendai Reiki, Medicine Dharma Reiki, Kwan Yin Reiki, Karuna Reiki, Reiki Plus, Unlimited Reiki, Reiki and Crystals, Reiki and Grids, Reiki Toning, to mention a few. Is energy healing experiencing a natural evolutionary growth, or a synthetic extrapolation caused by the need to offer more to budding healers hungry for hidden rituals, secrets texts and complex symbolism? Of course there are some valid healing tools that are now appearing on earth at this critical time in our history, but I am beginning to question the need for more and more fractionalization of something that seems basic and fundamental to this entity called “Energy Healing”. Becoming a Reiki Master was never meant to be the end of one’s education or experience in healing. Life goes on, and the moment we feel we have arrived at the pentacle of our achievement we have just died to the spirit of life. Many years ago Bob Dylan said “He not busy being born is busy dying”. But do these endless additions and revisions help bring more life to our Reiki knowledge and practice, or do they somehow miss the point of life’s organic nature and spiritual origin? If I wish to own a cow, it is better that I do not buy one that has been wrapped up for me in increasingly smaller and more convenient packages. It is much too hard to accumulate all the appropriate pieces and reassemble these assorted tidbits back into the original animal. Even after much effort the reassembled cow would lack the essence of the original, and probably not produce much milk. I am only using Reiki, a fairly well known modality, as an example. From my observations, it seems that something similar is happening in other healing modalities as well, causing me similar misgivings. But aside from healthy skepticism, is there perhaps something more to see than “too many classes, not enough time”? Is there a reasonable explanation for the recent abundance of branches on this most fertile tree? Perhaps there is some common ground, some underlying essence in each of these chunks of the sacred cow. The most obvious similarity in each energy healing modality is the energy, the “Universal Life Force Energy”, and how to access it. How hard is it to access this energy for healing purposes, or even for our own daily use? If we surf the internet we will find literally hundreds of methods to acquire, assimilate, manipulate and project this most basic of Universal Energy. But what we really discover if we dig into some of these systems is that we as human beings are designed to access this energy naturally, just by virtue of being human. We are designed from the DNA up to access and use this Ki (Chi, Prana) energy in any way we desire. How could it be otherwise? This is “life force energy” we are talking about. It keeps us alive. It is and should be the most natural thing in the Universe for us to have total, abundant and unobstructed flow of this vital energy coursing through our being. What is the basic requirement for access to this energy? The basic requirement is being human, naturally human. The term “Human Being” is essentially not a noun but a verb; a human being human. The most natural thing for a human being to do is to access and utilize Universal Life Force Energy. How does this energy act when we access it? It seems to respond to our thoughts. How could it be otherwise? It makes us healthy when abundant. It makes us strong if we extend it through our mind and body. It helps promote healing when we give it lovingly to others. Tom Brown Jr., the author of many spiritually oriented nature survival books, quoted his spiritual mentor, Grandfather, as saying, “The distortion of truth lies in man’s quest to complicate all that is simple and pure. Doctrines and ceremony are argued, churches and temples are separated, and man strives to complicate more. What should be is striving to bring back the simple truths, unadulterated by man’s ceremonious crutches”. Is there something to be gained from the many additions and variations to energy healing? Is there anything to learn from taking more and more classes, learning more and more symbols and modalities? If we learn to be more “naturally human”, the answer may be yes.
